HeadsUP! is an interactive hands-on educational program that aims to teach young people about emotional intelligence and mental health. Emotional intelligence is a set of skills associated with monitoring one’s own and others ‘emotions, and the ability to use emotions to guide one’s thinking and actions. Developing emotional intelligence enables children/youth to manage their emotions effectively and avoid being derailed, for example, by a flash of anger or worry. Children with higher emotional intelligence are better able to pay attention, are more engaged in school, have more positive relationships, and are more empathic.

There is strong evidence suggesting that programs offering resilience-based strategies can be an important protective factor for children living with an unprecedented levels of stress throughout the pandemic.

The HeadsUP! program’s clinical framework pulls from resilience theory, trauma-informed practices, and child-centered play therapy and is designed to capture effective evaluation measures.

Ultimately, our goal is for kids to build positive relationships with peers, gain knowledge of social-emotional health, and develop new coping skills that will help them grow and thrive.
